Adventure Series: Climbing, Trekking, and Skiing Baffin Island

March 21 1:30 and 7:30 p.m.
Mark Synnott is renowned in the climbing world for his many big wall and alpine climbing adventures. His travels have taken him on more than 25 expeditions to remote places around the globe. One of the first climbers to explore Baffin Island's remote east coast, Mark has been on five trips to the island, and has pioneered four big wall first ascents in the area, including a Grade VII on the 4,700-foot north face of Polar Sun Spire—an epic wall that required the team to spend 36 nights in portaledges clining to the side of the cliff. March 30-31 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This two-day class in the basic principles of celestial navigation is designed especially for yachtsmen and recreational boaters, but it is also appropriate for anyone interested in the topic. April 4 Lecture and Planetarium Show 1:30-3 p.m. and 7:30-9 p.m.
Early voyages of discovery were literally lost at sea on ships that could not determine their longitude. Join Douglas Drumheller, Ph.D. for a special presentation about how John Harrison, an 18th-century clockmaker, changed all that. Drumheller will also describe his replica of Harrison's sea clock and his plan to navigate the Atlantic with it. Following the lecture see a planetarium show that further illustrates the underlying connection between time and celestial navigation.
