Charles W. Morgan Restoration Update:
One of the key tenets of restoration work is the retention of as much original material as possible. Initially, the shipwrights thought they could save the planking, which was installed in 1841, from the 7th strake down to the keel. After they removed a couple of planks in this area, they found erosion between the frames on many of the planks which suggested the need to remove all of this material. Read more.

A New Journal
The G.W. Blunt White Library recently received a journal for the 1889-90 voyage of the Charles W. Morgan out of San Francisco. There has been tremendous interest in this journal, because the keeper, Honorio A. Martin, the second mate, along with the crew of his boat, were left behind by the Morgan after a Nantucket sleigh ride took them out of range of the ship. Read more

A Message from President Steve White
|
| NEW FOR 2012!
We hope this issue of the eNewsletter finds all of you still in the afterglow of the holidays, and please accept our best wishes for a vibrant and successful 2012! By and large we say goodbye to 2011 with very few regrets, because as a whole it was a fine year. Were it not for the untimely visit of Tropical Storm Irene, we probably would have had our best summer in years, but as it turned out the storm reduced our visitation to a trickle for 10 days, including Labor Day Weekend. The Irene "hangover" impacted this part of Connecticut in a significant way, but we gradually recovered and a warm November and December provided us with a most favorable uptick in attendance! Additionally, this year's Lantern Light Tour was a smash hit, giving us one of the best seasons in recent history!
Please remember that the Museum’s grounds are closed to visitors, including members, Jan. 2 through Feb. 15. All other Museum functions will be operationing as usual. Please check the note below for the hours for the Gallery, Store, Latitude 41° Restaurant, and the Café & Bake Shop during this time period. This short-term closure will save the Museum quite a bit of money, largely in heating expenses, and will allow us to do important work around the campus and in exhibits which is difficult to do while we are open to the public.

Winter Hours: January 2–February 15

We want to remind our members and friends that the Museum will be closed to visitors for the first six weeks of the new year (January 2–February 15). Although the grounds will not be open to the public, the Museum will be an active and productive place during that time. Work will continue on the Charles W. Morgan restoration and voyage, planning for new exhibits and programs will be under way in the Exhibits Department, the facilities staff will be sprucing up our historic buildings and grounds, Williams-Mystic students will be in session, and the Education Department will continue to bring America’s maritime heritage to the classroom.
We reopen in time for school vacation in February and will welcome visitors and school groups to two new exhibitions in the spring (“Treasures from the Collections” and an art show in collaboration with the Dalvero Academy of Brooklyn), as well as to the many fun events and activities we have in the works.

Author Series Kicks Off with Mark and Talia Kurlansky
|
|
|
Wednesday, February 1, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Latitude 41° Restaurant
Imagine a planet with orange oceans, toxic seawater, and marine life that consists almost solely of jellyfish. This may sound like science fiction, but it's actually a realistic projection of what our world will become if we don't move now to save the ocean's fish from extinction. Could they be gone in the next 50 years? Mark Kurlansky, the author of the New York Times bestseller Cod, and his 10-year-old daughter and fishing companion Talia, talk about the prolific author's latest book, World Without Fish.
